How Could I Stand In The Way Of God

How Could I Stand In The Way Of God

“As I began to speak,” Peter continued, “the Holy Spirit fell on them, just as he fell on us at the beginning. Then I thought of the Lord’s words when he said, ‘John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.’ And since God gave these Gentiles the same gift he gave us when we believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I to stand in God’s way?” – (Acts 11:15-17)

Breaking through prejudice and hatred is tough. We often need some dramatic act that captures our attention and moves our hearts. God gave his people that dramatic act through the work of dreams, visions, and direction of the Holy Spirit in the conversion of Cornelius. God was determined to break down the barriers that stood between peoples and nations and races (Eph. 2:14-18).

If we oppose “the Spirit of unity” (Eph. 4:3), we need to understand that we are standing in the way of God! Disunity, prejudice, and division are actions that directly oppose and grieve the Holy Spirit (Eph. 4:29-32).

Prayer : Dear Father, I know that Jesus prayed for unity, so I join my Savior in his prayer. Help us be one. Convict us when we are divisive. Open our eyes to the damage our hurtful and hateful words can cause. Send your Holy Spirit to move us, change us, and draw us closer together in you. In Jesus’ name I offer my prayer. Amen.

Memorial Day Prayers

Memorial Day Prayers

Memorial Day was originally called Decoration Day, and it commemorates all the U.S. soldiers who died while in the military service. Memorial Day is a United States federal holiday observed on the last Monday of May. And so, today we remember our brave soldiers in a very special way.

Prayer for Our Soldiers

Almighty God, we commend to your gracious care and keeping all the men and women of our armed forces at home and abroad. Defend them day by day with your heavenly grace; strengthen them in their trials and temptations; give them courage to face the perils which beset them; and grant them a sense of your abiding presence wherever they may be; through Jesus Christ our Lord. God, hold our troops in your loving hands. Protect them as they protect us. Bless them and their families for the selfless acts they perform for us in our time of need. I ask this in the name of Jesus, our Lord and Savior. Amen.

Special Forces Prayers

Almighty God Who is the Author of Liberty and the Champion of the oppressed hear our prayer. We the men of Special Forces, acknowledge our dependence upon Thee in the preservation of human freedom. Go with us as we seek to defend the defenseless and to free the enslaved. May we ever remember that our nation, whose oath “in God We Trust,” expects that we shall requite ourselves with honor, that we may never bring shame upon our faith, our families, or our fellow men. Grant us wisdom from Thy mind, courage from Thine heart, and protection by Thine hand. It is for Thee that we do battle, and to thee belongs the victor’s crown. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power and glory forever. Amen!

Asking Divine Protection for Those In Service

O God, I beseech You, watch over those exposed to the horror of war, and the spiritual dangers of a soldier’s or sailor’s life. Give them such a strong faith that no human respect may ever lead them to deny it, nor fear ever to practice it. By Your grace, O God, fortify them against the contagion of bad example, that being preserved from vice, and serving You faithfully, they may be ready to meet you face to face when they are so called: through Christ our Lord. Heavenly Sovereign, inspire them with sorrow for sin, and grant them pardon. Be with them on the battlefield during life and at the hour of death, and grant that they may live and die in the grace of thy Son. May their Guardian Angel protect them. Amen.

A Soldier’s Prayer

Lord Jesus, Mighty Warrior and Prince of Peace, all glory and power is yours. I offer myself and my military career for the welfare of our nation and for your glory. You said “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord”; make us mindful of our nation’s heritage and of who we are. You said “Be strong and of good courage”, this is my prayer. You said “A king is not saved by his great army; a warrior is not delivered by his great strength”; be my protection and my strength. While I defend the nation, may all of Heaven safeguard my family back home.

Almighty God, when you will to safely return me home, help me to see in each member of my family all that I am willing to fight for- life, liberty, freedom and justice. Give me wisdom to share what experiences would lead my sons to Christ-like valor, my daughters to Christian compassion. When Mary witnessed you falling wounded to the ground, she reaffirmed her trust in God her savior. Fill my spouse with surety in your divine plan for me, our family and our nation. You called me to be a soldier. March along side me. Jesus, I place my trust in you. Amen.

Did Jesus Christ have a beard? The Bible gives no account of any beard. The word “beard” is absent in New Testament. Although Jewish custom may have required men to be bearded, many of the earliest images of Jesus show him beardless.

Then how then did our image of Jesus develop? Fairly early in history, He was shown as a man on the verge of middle age, with brown to black hair and beard, and an appearance of sorrow and compassion. Beyond this, however, each age has produced its own variant of the Jesus image to meet its own needs, projections, and beliefs.

Black Jesus images have also found their place on the Internet. Was Jesus black? Dark-skinned pictures of Jesus have been known from the earliest times. The first picture on this page is a painting from the 1960s, artist and source unknown.

The debate is not new. Throughout the 20th century, black theologians argued that showing Jesus as a white-skinned European is not only historically inaccurate, but profoundly alienating for non-Europeans. Some 20 million Africans were taken as slaves to the New World by Europeans between the 16th and 19th centuries, and images of a white Jesus reinforce the idea that Christianity is a “white man’s religion”. Black theologians argue that since Jesus came to bring good news to the poor and oppressed – to set them free from their chains – he should be shown looking like the poor and oppressed, and not like the world’s rich and powerful.

Perhaps we do well to end where we began and question our own modern preoccupation with the physical appearance of Jesus and other biblical figures. It is true we are visual and will always prefer to see the face of those we love. But the Bible’s silence on these matters may be instructive and we do well to consider that the Scriptures invite us to look deeper than appearance, deeper than race or ethnicity.

The Word became flesh in Jesus, but the Word must also become flesh in us and we must learn to find Christ in the Sacraments (cf Luke 24:31,35), in the poor, in our neighbor, our enemy, our very selves.
