Why Pray To Virgin Mary?

chittor-mother-mary-statue

Why should we pray to Virgin Mary? The reasons are many.

Why do Catholics pray to Mother Mary? Is Rosary really powerful?

The intercession of Mother Mary is very powerful as Jesus cannot neglect His mothers commands. This can be proved by the first miracle Jesus did at the wedding at Cana. – (John 2:1-11). Mother Mary told Jesus “They have no more wine.” And what was the final result? He turned water into wine.

In “The Poem of the Man-God” by Maria Valtorta, she says that Jesus told her about this incident as “I did it for Mary”. This proves that the intercession of Mother Mary is very very strong.

Mother Mary was blessed with Holy Spirit abundantly. We can see this as we read “At that time Mary got ready and hurried to a town in the hill country of Judea, where she entered Zechariah’s home and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.” (Luke 1:39-41) ; just by Virgin Mary’s greeting.

Listen to the talk from Apologetics on Mary, Purgatory and The Bible

What the angels thought on this matter:-

When angel appeared before Zechariah, father of John, angel just greets him by his name ,nothing more although he was “upright in the sight of God, observing all the Lord’s commandments and regulations blamelessly.” – (Luke 1:6)

When angel appeared before Joseph, the greeting was like this: “an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.” – (Matthew 1:20). Angel greeted him ‘son of david’, thats all.

Now let us see how did the angel greet Virgin Mary. It goes like this: “The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.” (Luke 1:28). See the difference….

  1. @ KTulu
THERE IS NOTHING LIKE “idolatry and un-biblical practices” the real prayer is INSIDE NOT OUTSIDE( WE GIVE RESPECT TO SAINTS NOT WORSHIP, U MIGHT FEEL OTHER THINGS BECAUSE U WANT TO DEFEND CATHOLICS IN ONE WAY OR OTHER AND PROVE THAT THEY ARE WRONG). IF YOU SAY THIS idolatry THEN EVEN THE ‘CROSS’ THAT YOU CARRY WITH U BECOME MEANINGLESS ( JESUS DIED FOR US ON CROSS, BUT WHY U NEED A CROSS YOU NEED ONLY JESUS)….THEN U BECOME A MUSLIM……TRY TO THINK OF OTHERS ‘VIEW POINT’ NOT IN OURSELF ITSELF !

    ABOUT CONVERSIONS

ITS MINE, YOUR AND ALL OUR DUTY TO MAKE THE EXTREMISTS UNDERSTAND THE REAL DUTY OF A CHRISTIAN………..
GOD WILL SURELY REWARD US IF WE SPREAD THE REAL MEANING OF GOSPEL……ie TO SPREAD CHRISTIANITY NOT CONVERSIONS WITHIN CHRISTIANITY ITSELF …..

HOPE YOU ALL WILL HELP ME TO SPEAD THIS MESSAGE.

MAY HOLY SPIRIT LEAD ALL OF YOU TO BETTER UNDERSTANDING………

  2. Alen,

    Read your message to KTulu.

First of all respecting saints (according to bible those who are born again are known as saints- Ref.1Cor 1:1-2, 2Cor 1:1, Eph 1:1, Phil 1:1)and praying to them and making them as mediotors before God the Father are two different things. Respecting saints ia biblicsl but praying to them and making them as mediators before God the Father is not biblical.

2 about the cross- you said
IF YOU SAY THIS idolatry THEN EVEN THE ‘CROSS’ THAT YOU CARRY WITH U BECOME MEANINGLESS ( JESUS DIED FOR US ON CROSS, BUT WHY U NEED A CROSS YOU NEED ONLY JESUS)….

Please note that cross in itself has no meaning in the life of a believer.Cross WITHOUT JESUS has no value for any of us. We got our three fold salvation ONLY because Jesus died on the cross and ressurected from the dead.Jesus is our saviour no other name is given for our salvation. I dont think anyone is carrying cross without Jesus for savation. Cross without Jesus is just only a 2 piece of wood which cannot give us eternal life. As per bible 1 John 5:11-12 (KJV)11 And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.

If we have Jesus Christ we have life those who have only cross WITHOUT JESUS CHRIST they don’t have eternal life (The Life of GOD).

    Be blessed in Jesus name

  3. Hello friends,
Greetings in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

I see a long discussion over here, and mainly about Mother Mary and The Bible, let me be plain, Bible was is not a single book thrown down from heaven, it is a collection of books, it was put together by mere humans in the year 380AD. it give good sense by putting Genesis in the Beginning and Revelation in the end. And so talking of canonized etc every thing is man made. And Bible itself was put together by man,the people who did this decided to stop adding any more books has the present book size itself is big. and talking of those other books, do those books deviate in any way from the Word of God.

And let me ask u all a question, in times of distress won’t u ask ur friends and relatives to pray for u? And 100% every one will do that. You people ask human beings mortals to pray for u. we ask those who have already entered the kingdom of God to pray for us.

Praying to Angles and Saints and especially to mother Mary, it is asking ur own mother to pray for u. If you oppose this then what u people do, forming prayer group and praying for each other is also wrong.

On ur point of view, if u have a problem then u alone must pray to God for relief. No other must pray with u and for u. Thats ridiculous. And so prayers to Angles and Saints and especially to Mother Mary is worthy.

  4. Dear George

Before you comment about parying the believers together please try to understand the scriptural meaning of Church. When we say to other bleivers to pray it means we are telling the church to pray and this is tallying with bible. But can u show a verse in bible which support parying to Mary or other saints who went to eternal rest. When the Rich man died and went to hell & he requested Lazerous to go and help his brothers and we all know the answer given by Lazerous.

If you are saying bible is only one the books then I am not going to say abyhting more. but for me Bible is not some story or philosopy or some atricles or hisroty but Bible is WORD OF GOD and as per John 1:1-4 (KJV)1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 The same was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men. I believe everything what bible says.

    be blessed in Jesus name

  5. Dear john,
Thank u for giving me this chance to explain the truth even briefly. let me tell u, when did the Church come into being, from the the Last Supper, then in the same place where the Apostles were hiding, and with them Mother Mary was there till Pentecost. thats what the same Bible says. Leave alone the Angles they are with God always. The Saints were also members of the Church and thats y they are canonized after much understanding on their life. Again i tell u, you people ask mortal members of the Church to pray for u, But we ask not only the mortal members but also the Eternal members of the Church to pray for us.

And talking about the Bible, every thing in the Bible is about The One and Only God, and so the repetition of words is not surprising, and because of the Repetition only the Books are put together, Remember the ending of St. John’s Gospel, there were many things that Jesus did, if he starts to write all this then the world could not contain it, which means Bible on its own is not full, it is God who is full, so Bible is not The Way, it is God the Only Way, and to get to the way, The Bible, our worship, prayers, etc, are a support. any other explanations pls put them down.

  6. George, (#203 comment)
All the people who are dead including mother Mary and all the Saints, they can not hear your prayer or see anything that is happening in the earth/world. Jesus is the only Savior and you can reach him directly.you do not need any dead person’s help for praying, healing or going to heaven. please read the Holy Bible carefully and keep your eyes and heart open. clear your mind away from all the man made traditions and teachings, then you will understand what is written in the Bible.

when we ask other people(family members, friends, church people etc)to pray for us we are asking alive human beings, not dead people.

We are only to worship/glorify the Creator and not the creatures.

    God Bless

  7. Dear Geena,
Please read the next comment(#205 comment) that i have posted. As the Bible says He is the God of Abraham, Issac, Jacob, Mosses. He is not the God of the dead, but the God of the Living. Mother Mary and Other Saints have already entered the Kingdom of God. Please Understand the present condition. The CHURCH needs the company of the Angles and Saints and especially Mother Mary, to fight the evil. And asking Them to pray is, as i told, worthy.
    regards,
    George.

  8. Dear Brother ntoppo,

Praise the Lord. And sorry for the delayed response
First i would like to convey few things, so as there may not be any mis-understanding or mis-communication from my end.

    1. I always try to draw your attention to biblical perspective. So please do not mis-understand whenever i ask for a biblical reference to any conclusion you has drawn on a particular topic.
    2. Also I believe that Bible is a holy document, which the god has presented for this generation, written down by spiritually inspired believers and through holy spirit we are led into completeness of the truth and understanding. (There can be different views on a topic but the truth is absolute.)
    3. Our main objective should be to find out this absolute truth with the help of holy spirit who guides us, all through the journey of a Christian life.
    4. And whatever God felt necessary for the salvation and journey of the believer, he has already made it available and documented in this book, and suggested not to add/remove any thing from this. If the Lord has felt anything more is required to convince at least one soul to save him from eternal death; he would have put it in this book.

So your argument to say, Jesus has done so many things, which have not been documented is invalid.
This is how our Lord wanted it to be. And that’s FINAL for our generation.

    Regarding our discussions….

I have asked you so many Questions, but you never answered to any of them with references. (I am assuming they are un-biblical.)
You can jump out of those Questions, by posting new Questions, but still they remain un-answered.

Let’s look at your new issues (contradictions).

Call no one your father on earth, for you have one Father-the one in heaven.–Matthew23:9
Indeed, in Christ Jesus I became your father through the gospel.–1Cor4:15

now a doubtful mind like yours(and anyone’s) will question why Paul is calling himself a father when God is the Father.
was it wrong when Elisha cried out saying these words when his master Elijah was ascending into heaven?
Father, father! The chariots of Israel and its horsemen!–2Kings2:12

God has given some individuals a new name when He blessed them or made a promise to them.
    Abram becomes Abraham.–Genesis17:15
    Jacob becomes Israel.—–Genesis32:28
same way Jesus is blessing(promising) Simon and He gives him a new name-Peter(means rock)

Now the people who wrangle over words(2Timothy 2:14) will say-how can there be two rocks because Christ(God) is the Rock?
these are the examples of senseless controversies(2Timothy2:23)

I don’t understand why you had to give so elaborated section to make a point that god can give a new name, when he ordinates them
for a higher calling. I agree on this.
I still believe, Christ is the ROCK on which, he intended to build his church on.
Even if I will take your word on face value (although no biblical parallel references are there) and assume that Peter is the rock
on which, Jesus has testified to build his church, what references can you point to, saying catholic church is the one which is
referred here and Pope should be the HEAD of this Church?

I think no believer will put his salvation at risk, by putting their trust on such a controversial organization. (I have posted
the controversies in my earlier posts. Can read them.). If we are being taught that God is going to overlook all those un-biblical
activities of the Catholic Church, then we are living a Satan’s lie. Catholic Church in its state can never be presented to Christ
    as his bride.

And brother you have Quoted 2Thimothy2:23, but please read the next verses 24-26. I am doing that here.

these types of confusions and questions come out from human minds. the same is here with the mediator ship of Virgin Mary and saints. Mother Mary, Peter and saints have nothing of their own but in Christ and through the gospel they are mediators.
I can pray for you but it’s your job how you get rid of these doubts. you may ignore these, or check out your faith in Jesus, or
just end with condemning Catholic Church.

people are asking again and again for the references from the bible about Mary and saints.
Bible doesn’t contain each and everything that God could have said to His People.
“But there are also many other things that Jesus did; if every one of them were written down, I suppose that the world itself
could not contain the books that would be written.” John21:25(no one would be able read them in one’s whole life.)
we should thank God that he has given us the Bible(containing just 1400 pages) to believe and imitate Christ, “not to be teachers
of the law, without understanding either what they are saying or the things about which they make assertions”.–1Timothy1:7

If our confusions and Questions are from our minds, why don’t you prove it wrong with biblical references where it says Mary,
Other passed away saints are mediators for those who are living. If these are my doubts, then they are valid ones. Please I
request again, instead of bluntly arguing, show me biblical references, where it is said, Mary and passed away saints can be our
    mediators.

If you want to say that, do not question/doubt the scripture and of course, i will do that. If it is outside the scripture, i will
question it, and it’s my duty as a believer to do that. And if your prayers are not going to answer these questions, it is you who
needs to examine your salvation and faith.

As i have already explained, that whatever is necessary for a believer has already been written down and compiled. And we need to
look into the bible to understand the bible. Only scripture can reveal the scripture.

Vijay i don’t know which denomination you belong to, but in Catholicism there cannot be a living saint or dead saint. a Christian’s whole life is a journey to holiness and it ends with his/her physical death. only then a christen can be considered
to be declared saint. your idea of dead saint seems to be unbiblical.

This point of Catholic church declaring believers as saints after their death, is invalid , and why so has been accurately
explained by our brother Ktulu. When Jesus declared redemption of Human Being as ‘It is Finished’ on the cross , why do we need to add more to it, by saying, we need to do good works as well. It is the job of Holy Spirit, who transforms us slowly into the character of Jesus Christ. If there is no change in our heart, i guess the person needs to question about his salvation itself.

    i tell you why.
Jesus describes physical death as a sleep.
the girl is not dead but sleeping.–Matthew9:24
our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep—John10:33
then who is really dead? one who doesn’t live in Christ.
but the widow who lives for pleasure is dead even while she lives.–1Timothy5:6
now when you say ‘a dead saint’ i think you mean a passed away saint. well, saints are always living because they reign with
Christ. “now he is God not of the dead, but of the living; for to him all of them are alive”.–Luke20:38

Using the above verses, Catholic church, and you have created a doctrine of your own.
Just question yourself, when a person dies, what happenes.Souls pass on into eternity, and Body is in the state of sleep.
Souls don’t sleep.(Soul sleep is Gnostic doctrine which is un-biblical.)

If we assume, that a soul sleeps waiting for judgment, it contradicts this verse… “And as it is appointed unto men once to
die, but after this the judgment:”-Hebrews 9:27

And Of course, Our God is the god of the Living , not of the dead.
Once a person, comes into salvation of Christ, through repentance and Belief in Christ as personal savior, he has crossed over from Eternal Death, to Eternal Life at that very moment.

    What does this mean ?

We believers are the part of Eternal Life in Christ, the movement we accepted Christ. Not after our death.
So we are Living in Eternity, and He is our God. And that makes him the God of the Living in Christ and not of the Dead in Christ.

you have mentioned the wedding at Cana. it is funny to say that Jesus is rebuking his mother. you have described it in very
    literal sense.

I don’t know what other sense you can derive from that..

“Catholic Church portrays and represents Mary as being more sympathetic than Jesus Christ”
no Pope has ever said that Mary is more sympathetic than Jesus Christ
and even if she looks more sympathetic then is it of her own? does it not reflect Jesus’ Mercy?
i have already said and i say again please don’t compare any human to Jesus Christ. This is real idolatry and un-biblical,
brother! don’t compare Him with Mary, Peter, Paul or other saints.

OK.I thought i said Catholic church is doing that.

i live in Chhattisgarh (India) and here in my village there are some non-Catholics who have same thoughts against Mary and
saints. they often invite me to leave Catholicism and join their group. i know that just being Catholic is not a ‘ticket’ to
heaven but just believing in Jesus also is not a guarantee. my parents have always been faithful to Catholic Church and i too
    wish to remain a Catholic.

If you still are not confident about where you are going, i guess you need to re-look into your salvation. if you had really known Christ, he would have already assured you, where he is going to take you.
“Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity” – Matthew 7:22-23

    and finally…
“therefore, my beloved, just as you have always obeyed me, not only in my presence, but much more now in my absence, work out
your own salvation with fear and trembling; for it is God who is at work in you, enabling you both to will and to work for his
    good pleasure.”–Phillippians2:12-13

While believers are not to fear hell-Jesus has guaranteed that no believer will go there (John 3:16-18; 5:24), we are to fear the Lord. This fear reflects both reverence for His awesome grandeur (e.g., Isa 6) and respect for His discipline (e.g., Heb 12:3-11). Believers are thus to exercise ongoing obedience with an attitude of reverential fear.
The translation work out is potentially misleading since one meaning of work out is to exercise something we already have (e.g., “he works out three times a week”).

It is not that we need to work out for our salvation? There is nothing man can do to receive salvation. It is a free gift from God.

If we are trying to do something, it’s like trying to bribe him with our good deeds, to let us in.

Phil 2:12 is not dealing with eternal salvation at all. Rather, it is dealing either with temporal salvation from the calamities which come upon the disobedient or with temporal salvation through the trials which faithful believers face.

May god lead this into your hearts.
    God bless.

  9. If anyone needs Biblical support for interceding to Mother Mary and Saints, please read on:

First of all, because Mary was the birth mother of the humanity of Jesus in who “the fullness of the deity (God) was pleased to dwell bodily,” [Col. 1:19, 2:9] Catholics recognize the Virgin Mary as the Mother of God.

Secondly, because Mary was “favoured by God” [Lk. 1:30] when she was personally chosen by the Lord to become the mother of Jesus, God incarnated, Catholics believe that they have a greater chance of obtaining God’s grace for their daily physical and spiritual needs by asking Mary to intercede on their behalf.

Thirdly, the above mentioned belief is partially based on the fact that Jesus is the King of kings and Mary, as the mother of the King, is the “queen mother.” Then, when studying Jewish history, it is discovered that the institution of the “queen mother” was established during the reign of King Solomon.

In the Old Testament, we learn of the favoured position of the queen mother through the following words, “… then the king sat on his throne, and had a throne brought for the king’s mother, and she sat on his right. Then she said, ‘I have one small request to make of you, do not refuse me.’ And the king said to her, ‘Make your request, my mother, for I will not refuse you.'” [1 Kgs. 2:19-20]

Following the reign of King Solomon, many of the kings kept this practice. The mother of the king, through who the king received his throne, was trusted as a confident and advisor. So important was the function of the queen mothers in the days of the Old Testament that their names were listed in the succession records of the kings of Judah. [See 1 Kgs 14:21, 15:13; 2 Kgs. 12:1, 14:2, 15:2, etc…]

Similar to the intercession of the Queen Mother, when a child desires a favour and cannot obtain it from his/her parents, frequently the child will make the request to the grandparent to intercede on his/her behalf, therefore obtaining the favour that was being sought. This does not mean that the child is seeking the parental favour from the grandparent. Rather, the child is seeking the intercession of the grandparents before the parents.

Furthermore, Catholics do not differentiate between the living (in this world) and the dead (those who departed) members of the Body of Christ (the fullness of the Church.) The fullness of the mystical Body of Christ is found in the union of all the saints, past and present, here below and those above in Heaven.

In view of the aforementioned, it cannot be denied that those who were called to Heaven, including Mary, are still alive in spirit in the Kingdom of God that coexists with our world. As some non-Catholics pray through their deceased parents, grandparents or other biological relatives, asking these beloved departed persons to intercede before God on their behalf, Catholics pray through Mary to Jesus, taking advantage of her blessed position as the Mother of God.

This Catholic action affirms the prophetic and Divinely inspired passage that is found in the Holy Bible where it states, “Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed.” [Lk. 1:47] All generations could not call Mary blessed if she was not actively involved in the progressive Divine Plan that continues to develop before our eyes.

Indeed, all generations have called the Blessed Virgin Mary blessed, including this one, because she has never stopped interceding on behalf of the world, her intercession obtaining endless miraculous cures and other favours.

The role of Mary in the area of obtaining physical miraculous cures is well known and documented in Lourdes, France, this being only one of the many holy places where the grace of God has been manifested through the Virgin Mary at apparition sites.

    God Bless You
    Jomy Joseph

  10. hello every body,
GREETINGS IN THE NAME OF CHRIST OUR LORD. The comments seems to go very long, and even i have added oil to this burning problem, why fighting amongst us Christans, we are one in the Mystical body of CHRIST.if any one who is going wrong let us pray to God to send His Holy Spirit to make us understand our sins.

  11. O.K. this may be simplistic but I believe in Jesus with my child like heart.
I understand from the bible That there is no God above God and for us gentiles there is only one way to the kingdom and that is through our faith in Jesus!
So would everyone have me believe that I should also be praying to Job , Elijah (taken directly into the kingdom)and Moses.
I think God is pretty clear in that we are all
to serve and favor from him does not make us anything close to be Gods ourselves.

  12. Dear Georgy,

    Praise the Lord.
I personally feel you have been great sport by allowing the various objections and me, scripturally pointing out the fallacies of Catholic Doctrine.I beleive it is for some reason, god has put all this together here. Anyone who wishes to find the truth from the scripture will have both choices, and let them choose the path. But beleive me this is gonna affect the life in eternity.(Hell or Heaven). One shouldn’t feel, after death that they have just missed heaven narrowly.(Why because of the twisted truth.). My earnest attempt was to clarify all those mis-leading conceptions which leads peaople away from the gospel truth. And I really thank you for letting my comments here, as it is. Its easy to raise the conciousness of a person who is willing and hungry for the word of God. But its difficult to bring conciousness into people who are in a TRANCE and are led by the worldly TRADITION.

may god bless you and lead you into completeness of truth.Amen.

  13. what a deception by the devil. God used so many people through out the Bible and history to fulfill His divine purpose. Mary is just one such chosen human to carryout His redemption plan on earth. God will never give place to any man or idol for He is a jealous God and there is of-course no one to take any little inch of His place. I bet Mary would be grieving over all you her worshipers and who go to her for intercession.

Catholic church has served the traditions, making Christianity look like idol worship. Did you know that Catholics persecute Christians in some parts of the world. All of this is Satan’s deception and God loves you. All of this started with man made traditions because they wanted Christianity to look like others religions and beliefs.”Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves.matt 7:15-20and titus 1:10-16

  14. Our preconceived notions play a very important role in how we interpret the bible and understand Christianity.
Roman Catholics have been brought up with the belief that mother Mary intercedes for us and other denominations have been taught otherwise.
There’s no point debating this topic!!
Jesus is the way, the truth and the life…..keep his commands and you will abide in his love.

  15. @trul8 first of all, u don’t have rights to condemn others as devil, etc. and it is a not a worship. The only worship we do is the breaking of the Bread. and the others are talking to different persons including Mother Mary. she is our mother and never post such words of afflicting the Catholic Church.

  16. Barshell,

Roman Catholics have been brought up with the belief that mother Mary intercedes for us and other denominations have been taught otherwise.

Except some of us haven’t. I myself am a convert.

  17. @Cheryl
Yes you are right…there are exceptions!!

We must not forget that Christianity is based on traditions….Jesus to his Disciples to early church fathers and so on….

Many rituals / beliefs have crept into our belief system/ Traditions, over time…due to various reasons..

We have adopted these and they are now part of our tradition……and they are being taught to Kids / Converts……

Read about what Jesus, his disciples and the early church fathers had to say….that will show you the truth……

John 14 to 17 Beautiful Chapters

  18. Those who are getting bored may visit the above “interesting time-pass site” mentioned by sister Geena. And those who are serious about ‘visions’ and face-to-face encounters with our Lord Jesus, and want to know more about them, may read the autobiography of st. Theresa of Avila.

  19. The problem with this is that many people raised as Catholics don’t understand what they are really doing when they “pray to Mary”, so when they try and explain it to others it ends up sounding like you are putting her on a par with Jesus.

The truth is that when people “pray to” Mary and the Saints all they are really doing is asking them to pray FOR them to the Lord our God.
Now some of you have said why bother? We don’t need intercession because of Jesus. Well that’s really missing the point.
I bet most (if not all) of you have asked a Christian friend to pray for you about something. Similarly, if someone asked YOU for prayer I bet you wouldn’t say “OH NO, we’re on dodgy ground here! You don’t need MY help, you have Jesus!”

Asking Mary and the Saints to pray for you to the Lord is no different.
Except with Mary and the Saints you are getting extremely holy and sanctified friends to pray for you who are in Heaven with God, in his presence and are available and praying 24/7!!!
No one is saying we NEED Mary and the Saints to pray for us and Christians should NEVER pray TO her in the sense that we pray to Almighty God.

There is nothing wrong with asking a friend to pray FOR you, and that is what Catholics are doing it’s just that they aren’t careful enough when they express this idea to protestants OR they don’t understand it themselves!

The reason I know this is because I have a protestant background and I was bowled over by the IGNORANCE of another friend who started to say Catholics worshipped Mary. So I decided to find out what misconceptions I may be operating under without knowing it, and I’m glad I did. You can’t always believe what other protestants tell you about Catholicism because often it’s just multiple hearsay.

Find out for yourself and then maybe you can genuinely add something to the debate. The only person who benefits from the division such ignorance causes is Satan.

    God Bless.

  20. Dear,
Mother Mary’s only teaching is John-2:5 His mother saith unto the servants, “Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it”. When I was praying the rosary (150)and visiting Velankanny, (Nagapattinam) that is what Mother Mary told me, son my work in this world is completed by giving my son on the Cross for the world so come after me, just do what ever he tells you. And Jesus has very clearly told us John-14:14″If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it”. May the Spirit of Truth lead our Pop,Cardinals,Bishops,Priest,Nuns, Brothers and sisters into all Truth, and the Truth shall set them free. May Father in heaven open their eys in Jesus name I pray

  21. Before I proceed, please say this prayer with me: “Heavenly Father, I pray that you open my heart and mind to receive a word from You today. Show me your truth Lord. In Jesus Name I pray. Amen.”
I too was once a Catholic. I am now a born again Christian. I believe that Jesus CHrist is the Son of God, that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh, sent by the Father to be the Saviour of the world. Christianity for me is a lifestyle, not a religion. Religion is man-made. Man lays out the law and the congregation must follow it. I urge everyone in a traditional church to compare your church’s doctrine/dogma with the Word of God. The Bible says “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge” (Hosea 4:6). Pray and ernestly ask God for revelation, for His guidance when you do your research. Pray for Him to open your hearts and minds, that He softens you. Often we are hardened to anything that is different from what we know/learnt, and automatically shut off from hearing anything anyone says.
If your laws/doctrines are not in line with what the bible says, you need to rethink some of your choices.
What did it for me is that in several canon laws, it states that if you do not believe in …. (whatever that particular law pertains to) let them be anethema. Anethema means:
    1. A formal ecclesiastical ban, curse, or excommunication.
    2. A vehement denunciation; a curse: “3. One that is cursed or damned.
    4. One that is greatly reviled, loathed, or shunned.
How can the church curse anyone? Especially when the bible states: “Gal 3:13 Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:”
Don’t let tradition/teachings/feelings lead you astray.
    Blessings in Jesus’ name!!!

  22. the most beautiful gift offered to us by jesus christ is mother mary.i am a jacobite girl and i consider mary as my own mother.nobody is praying to mary but we are just asking help only.mary is our mother and we can ask help to our mother.

  23. At the above poster ImReady, whoa! I suggest you to read the comments instead and keep an open mind if possible before passing your judgment. Seems like you have taken the word ” The truth” for granted. This discussion is never ending. Rather try if possible to understand the counter view points. I wouldn’t want to repeat whatever has been told already. No one can ‘judge’ a believer’s ( Catholics, protestants and all other communities) personal relationship with Jesus. Try not to do that. Peace out.

  24. Greetings all in the wonderful name of Jesus our Lord and Saviour. Shew, I read some of these comments, but I am not a judge, God is the ulitmate Judge. But I have this to say: I am proudly Catholic, I may not be “reborn” but each day I am reborn in the Holy Spirit of my Lord. Some many ppl have a lot to say about Mary our Blessed Mother, (u r all entitled to your opinions), but leave Her out of it. If u choose not to “pray” to Her so be it.

Whatever u believe or don’t it still does not change the facts; God sent His Beloved Son down to earth to save us sinners & in order to do that, He chose Mary to be His be hand-maid and Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit. Now when the Angel approached Mary he said “Behold the handmaid of the Lord”, so give Her the respect that belongs to Her. Because if She had not accepted God’s plan, we would not have Salvation through Jesus Christ as we do today. So whether or not u accept it, just live with it.

For me personally Mother Mary has carried me just like a mother carries her child and especially when her child is hurting. There is power in the “Hail Mary’, there is power in the Rosary, (which I wear proudly) and there is power in the name of the Blessed Virgin Mother Mary and by saying all this it has not stopped me from loving Jesus and giving Him the Honour and Glory that belongs to Him, but it has drawn me closer to Him for the respect I have for His Dear Mother and because there is a feeling of warmth within me.

So for those that were brought up Catholic, but are no longer Catholic, that is your choice and we respect it so stop disrespecting us Catholics and our beliefs & to my Catholic brothers and sisters be proudly Catholic and walk with your heads up high – Hail Mary, Full of Grace, the Lord is with thee, Blessed are You among women and blessed is the fruit of Your Womb. Holy Mary MOTHER of GOD pray for us now and at the hour of our death. Amen God bless u and your loved ones.

  25. Hello friends,

I believe that jesus christ is the only mediator between me or you and God “The Father”.Mother Mary and Saints come in between us and Jesus Christ. Now, Do we need thier intercession?. For me personally I believe that we do.

When Mary said “Yes” to the Lord, it was for you and for me. So, please respect her.!!! And please, we are all mature individuals here. So, please respect each others beliefs and opinions. I have a suggestion to make and this is for everyone who wants to understand why the catholic church believes what it believes.

If you have any questions about why the church venerates mary, you can go to this website : and it gives you completely scripture based reasons. Choose free mp3downloads under apologetics and you can listen to them. This is a very helpful resource and hope it helps and God bless you all.

  26. I dont agree and i dont believe in Mary. God only chose her to be in His plan. She was only the part to be glorify Himself but not to worship her. I Believe in JESUS who is the only one christ and He loved us so much and He died on our place on the calvary (jonh 3:16).

  27. Just FYI:

Worship: formal or ceremonious rendering of honour and homage.

Veneration: a feeling of awe, respect, etc.

  28. I love Mary so much! There are so many things that are in Christianity, that aren’t found within the Bible. So many Mysteries, Miracles and Acts of Christ which we experience all around us.

Mother Mary is so close to God, she is the Mother of Christ, as a Catholic I believe she was no ordinary woman. God equipped her through an Immaculate Conception, creating her as the “New Eve” giving her the opportunity to choose God. She could have been like Eve, and ate from the apple, but she didn’t, and in her choosing God and sinlessness she was equipped to carry the MOST PRECIOUS GIFT in her unordinarily grace-filled womb and carry Christ into the world. She didn’t give birth to Jesus and sit on the sidelines like most women, she was by His side.

Ever seen the Passion Of Christ? Watch it and look at Mary in this… Every waking moment of our Lords death, she was there, suffering with Him. Mary, though so often silent through much of the Bible, is not ordinary by any means, she is someone who I know sits beside God in Heaven and is honored for all she has done for the world. I feel comfort in knowing I can talk to her and I can ask her to bring things to Christ for me. God gave her to me as my heavenly Mother, and I know she is looking out for me on earth. She wants the best for me, she wants to see me grow closer to Son, whom she loves more than any human being can even begin to imagine. She is the Eve that didn’t eat the apple, she is Mary, and she is my Mother, full of Grace, with whom the Lord is with. Don’t dismiss her, until you know really her.

  29. i have downloaded all those mp3s. Wonderful!
    what a wonderful work!
Mary and the Bible,Marriage and the Eucharist, one Church, the rapture and the bible, once saved always saved? quite relevant topics.
i thank Jisha once again for her least but love-driven job. i was ignorant of the most of the heights and depths of the catholic faith.
i think I’ve never heard such beautiful and powerful talks.
it’s normal to become rude or harsh when you can’t express fully what you believe or know about your faith. i say sorry to those whom i have offended by my words and i forgive those who may think that they might have hurt me.

it’s not less than hating Mary when you say that you don’t need her. after all, do we really “need” anything and anyone other than God? No.
and does God really need anything and anyone? angels, Mary, saints, Church, or you and me? No.
    Love is the answer.
    Lord Jesus bless us all.

  30. Dear Jisha..
Thank you so much for the link.. This is what I needed the most.
I have downloaded all mp3s but was able to listen to only ‘Mary and the Bible’. And that alone has answers for all questions that have been put forth in this very discussion thread.

@bro ntoppo thank you for your wonderful feedback.
I must say, your previous discussions in this thread have made me strong in my faith.

God bless you all messengers of Gospel..

And thank you Georgy, without you really, none of this was possible in my life:):)

For the true happiness I experience all of you are majorly responsible.

    Praise the Lord..!

  31. Hi JOMY JOSEPH,
Your name is Jewish but I am impressed that you are a Catholic Priest who is still searching the Bible for God’s Word that would favor Catholicism. Believe me, you will find none but instead find out that the Truth and it will “set you free”. Take it from me, “Speculation is the Mother of All Evil.”

    JOMY JOSEPH – written 02-5-2011
First of all, because Mary was the birth mother of the humanity of Jesus in who “the fullness of the deity (God) was pleased to dwell bodily,” [Col. 1:19, 2:9] Catholics recognize the Virgin Mary as the Mother of God.

    My Reply
The biblical context of these verses is basically about the Supremacy of Jesus and the apostle Paul reaching this message to the Colossians. It is so deceiving to connect Mary to these passages. This is ultimately satanic because, the Good News about Jesus is being adulterated by the Vaticanic teaching. Look what Satan does to the importance of Easter Sunday. He did not remove Christ but adulterated it with the Lovely Bunny. Satan did not remove Christ on Christmas but mix-in the figure of Santa Claus. Now the preaching of Jesus by the apostle to the Colossians, you are again inserting, if not alluding Mary? God does not need a mother whom He rebukes several times.
There is nothing wrong about respecting Mary but let it stay that way RESPECT the memories about her. To let her intercede for mankind is SORCERY she died and is now in heaven. She has nothing to do about God’s business on earth. We are on church age, under the advent of the Holy Spirit who is one with the Triune God.

    JOMY JOSEPH – written 02-5-2011
Secondly, because Mary was “favoured by God” [Lk. 1:30] when she was personally chosen by the Lord to become the mother of Jesus, God incarnated, Catholics believe that they have a greater chance of obtaining God’s grace for their daily physical and spiritual needs by asking Mary to intercede on their behalf.

    My Reply
Mary is the FAVORED ONE..She is blessed. That is true and all should respect that. But if you say that God would listen to her prayer than to any believer’s prayer, that is playing favoritism. John 3:16 say God loves the World! And Equally – READ YOUR BIBLE MY FRIEND, don’t be blinded by TRADITION which basically Catholicism which is UNBIBLICAL. READ 2 Thessalonians’ 3:6
“Anything you ask in my Name” Jesus said, and this is for all believers “I will do it” READ: John 14:12-15. Mary cannot hear our prayers. You have to be God to do that. Mary is dead. We will see her come Kingdom come.

    JOMY JOSEPH – written 02-5-2011
Thirdly, the above mentioned belief is partially based on the fact that Jesus is the King of kings and Mary, as the mother of the King, is the “queen mother.” Then, when studying Jewish history, it is discovered that the institution of the “queen mother” was established during the reign of King Solomon.

    My Reply
Please respect my intelligence. Catholic Teachings is only now touching lessons from the Old Testament. If Vatican is literate about the Old Testament, which they are but has ignore it, Abraham, Jacob, Moses, Joshua, Isaiah, Jeremiah and the rest should be SAINTS – they SPOKE TO GOD and was LEAD BY GOD! Can you give me a name of a Pope or a Catholic Saint that has reached this level in their Walk with God? Why aren’t any men of God of the Old Testament considered as Saint by the Catholic? Who ever thought you that Mary is the queen of heaven is Satanic. Jeremiah 7:18-19 tells us that claim angered God! If your Claim is True, the Pope should make an ex-cathedra DOGMA – no questions ask – pronouncement, that the Holy Trinity is replaced by the HOLY QUARTET of Heaven, because Mary is one of Gods now being the QUEEN OF HEAVEN.
I’ll stop here and Let me end with my response to tell you my unsolicited advice “ What You do not Know, You cannot teach” What you do not have, you cannot give.”
Seek Jesus and the Triune God alone and you have God live in you – don’t mix Mary, for it is against the First Commandment! Remember, the God of the Bible is a JEALOUS GOD
If I sounded rude, sometimes it is needed to show kindness. GOD LOVES YOU

  32. In a family, either in times of joy or sorrow, the first person whom the children approach is the Mother for sharing their happiness or seeking solace. At the same time when we require something we approach the mother and inform her what we require and why do we need it. The mother in turn speaks to her husband /father and ensures that our requirement is fulfilled. Jesus Christ is the Son of God and Omnipotent, every one prays to him first and we also to pray to Mary, the Mother of Christ and seek her intercession. Mary is the Mother of Christ and Mother to all of us.

  33. dear lambert,
What ever u say, mother’s place in a family can’t be denied. So, Mother Mary’s position in the church can’t be denied, and there is a reason for not canonizing the old testament people has saints, they are already elevated by God himself, God of Abraham, God of Issac, God of Jacob, thats is how God in the old testament was addressed. Those after The era of Christ’s life on earth are also to be made known thats why they are made saints.
    Regards,
    GeOrGe

  34. Lovers of God please remember that without Mary’s ‘Yes’ to Gabriel there would have been no redemption of humanity. It was freely given.
Please also remember that Our Lord Jesus established one Church i.e. The Catholic Church founded upon Peter-the 1st Pope.
Apparently in the USA alone there are hundreds of bodies claiming to be the Church of Christ. That lacks logic.
May I recall that the Bible came out of the Catholic Church.
Now some verse about my Saviour and his Mother.
    God bless you all!!!
    ~
    The Ballad Of Jesus

By the grace of The Spirit
    Our Lord He came forth
    From the womb of Mary
    An immaculate source.

    To redress Adam’s fall
    Was Our Saviour’s cause
    Miracles and preaching
    About spiritual laws.

    For three years toiling
With no day at a loss
    Sowing seeds of life in
    The shadow of a cross.

    And when the time came
    To redeem humanity
    Lord Jesus was crucified
    And died on a Friday.

    All was ordained prior
To His birth in a stable
Offering life to our race –
    God’s loving life eternal.

And in a grace filled day
    Just a few days later
    He arose from the dead
    Confirming His nature.

    The Ballad Of Mary

    I’ll sing of a maiden
    With a beauty so rare
    Mother of Our Saviour
    From the land of Israel.

    Requested by Gabriel
    To bring forth God’s Son
    The Redeemer of all
    From the evil of sin.

    Oh Immaculate Virgin,
    Dear Mother of us all,
    Your “Yes” was required
    To redress Adam’s fall.

    And now loving Spouse
    Of the Spirit of Love
    We desire to bring others
    To share in our trove.

    And as Our Lord Jesus
    Is always with You
    May we draw ever closer
    To walk with You two…

    For life is a vocation
    To follow Your Son
    God’s source of salvation
    For each and everyone.

    My Reply,
True Faith is led by God’s Word, the Bible. Man’s opinion is for market talk – which is SPECULATION, the Mother of All Evil. It is not what I say,but a reaction based on biblical facts and also based on the neglect of “The Counsel of Trent” and “Vatican II”. The Roman Catholic Fathers intended to bring to the World the Credit that belongs to the Jews – using their powers as an empire with the use of the Sword and the Alibi of the Cross of Jesus to impress a suedo “Pagan-Christian” Religion the Italian way. Just like Islam, they copy and flagerized the true Doctrines of the Holy Word of God in favor of their Italian traditions and Imaginary religious doctrine. Only the Bible can Interpret the Bible – those who add to the canonized word of God will have their day in God’s Court. By the way, this SAINT business of the Roman Catholic invention is without biblical basis. All True Christians are SAINTS and equal in the eyes of God – Galatians 3:29. Mother Teresa or Mama Mary or Simple Shirley are equal in God’s eye.
And in addition. The Holy Trinity is composed of THREE PERSON of God – Please don’t add Mary! There is no such thing as the Holy Trinity plus Mary making it the Holy Quartet in Heaven. Biblical Facts and not Imagination based on Italian Tradition is not acceptable to a well read and educated generation. Vatican made good during the dark centuries and times of the “Ignoramus” country and people they conquered. Remember we were not born Yesterday!

  36. Hi i am responding to Joseph who said
JOHN 19:26-27 — When Jesus saw His mother there, and the disciple whom He loved standing nearby, He said to His mother, “Dear woman, here is your son,” and to the disciple, “Here is your mother.”
In John19:26-27, when the Lord came of age, He would not address Mary as “mother” but “woman” as He did with other women. Mary is the physical mother of the Lord Jesus but not His spiritual or heavenly “mother”

Mary is not our Mediator, Jesus is.
1Tim2:5 “for there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus (not Mary)”

  37. Hello bretheren

I have never seen anywhere in the scriptures where we are Instructed to pray to Mary the mother of Jesus. Yes the bible sometimes speaks in parables but I have never seen any that Instructs us to pray to virgin marry. just because something has been praticed for a very long time does not make it the right way of doing things; we are all human beings and sometimes we should accept corrections and change for the better while time still permits.

  38. Dear friends,

Bible was not written in english for the first time. When translations are made, they use the best word to bring out the meaning for that context. Please listen to the talk on https://www.turnbacktogod.com/mary-purgatory-and-the-bible/ which is about Mary and bible.

In that talk he talks about Jesus adressing mary as woman. It will be very helpful as it talks about a lot of other things including if she is just the physical mother or jesus and that might answer your questions. In the bible, it does not say that she was just the physical mother of jesus, but elizabeth welcomes her as the “mother of her lord”. If she was just the physical mother and God wanted us to know that, it would have been stated.

Another thing is, sometimes to understand something completely we have to go back to tradition and understand why they did, what they were did. It can be wrong, but it might be right too. when searching, go with an open mind, know that there is a chance that it can be against what we believe, or it might not be.

In the bible it does not say that we have to pray to mary and just know that as catholics we dont “pray” to mary. We only pray to god. Rather than praying “to” her, we pray “with” her.

One more thing, nowhere in the Bible, does it say that everything that we believe has to be seen in the Bible. In fact, Bible does not talk about Holy trinity even though we know that all of us totally believe in trinity.

So friends, speaking truth in love here, I love you all in Jesus Our lord. Even though Catholic church and her teachings might look strange to you now, and i can understand why, if someday you get a chance to know more, it will make perfect sense. And if it does not, thats ok because God loves us all anyway.

  39. I don’t care how many ways you slice it or dress it up and sprinkle this Not so Clear teaching about intercessory prayer to mary. None of you catholics have offered any solid biblical scriptural evidence to solidify the belief in the rosary. I only hear opinions or shady explainations that aren’t supported in anywhere in the Holy Word of God. On the other hand my true brothers and sisters have offered plenty of scripture to back our belief in one way and only THE ONE JESUS. “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who does not enter by the sheepfold by the door, but climbs up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber. JOHN 10:1_”Then Jesus said to them again,”most assuredly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. All who ever came before Me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not hear them. I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture. JOHN 10:7,8,9
Or will you blatantly ignore the the words of the Lord Himself and keep following the teachers of the law. Pray to the Lord Jesus Christ for understanding and it will be given to you. God bless you all with it in Jesus precious name amen.

  40. AMEN!!!

thank you for telling my children to pray.
I too am praying constantly for my children so that they may follow my Son who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life.
those who really -i say really- love my Son, are always under my motherly care and i will protect them from every weapon of satan.

it’s ok if you call me an “ordinary woman”(though i am not) or just a mere creature. it dosn’t hurt me because neither any lie nor the “father of all lies” can hurt me.
but i’m hurt when you look at me as an obstacle to my Son. how i wish people to love my Son!
The Father has given me glory, and one day you too are going to share that glory with me then why don’t you “strive”(Lk13:24) for the salvation of you and of your brethren instead of “working hard” to prove the words of the bible, and to question those which are not in the bible.
i rejoice when my children love me because it’s Jesus who loves me through them. and my Son rejoices when i love them because it’s Him who is loved in them.

    thank you
    your beloved & blessed mother,
    the Handmaid of the Lord

  41. Is praying to Mother Mary a sin? If its not a sin, then there is no point in arguing against it. But if it is a sin, it has to be …. stopped (i guess)?

Ok, maybe one should define what is sin?

    rgds,
    Dani.
