Many folks struggle with the past. Mostly it will be about negative experiences. Sometimes it will be about the successes they had. It’s not that the past won’t leave them. No, they won’t leave the past!
Two major issues when you hold on to the past
1. Past victories are just victories of the past.
No, I am not minimizing the good things of the past. But, the truth is, past victories are just victories of the past. It may not be benefitting us directly now. Some of those victories may have been diminished by new victories. Besides, there are new challenges to be tackled.
2. You cannot move forward with your eyes backward.
If you doubt this, try out for yourself (Caution: Danger!). It is not only about the eyes but also about our mind. With our mind on our past, we cannot do a focused effort for the now and the next. It’s just impossible.
Two significant ways to get unstuck from the past
1. Learn the art of forgetfulness.
It is something we got to take the initiative to do because it won’t happen automatically. Once I heard an incident where a lady was asked how she could forget her gruesome experience of being abused. She replied, “I choose to.”
Is it possible? It is. That doesn’t mean you will not have any of the past in your mind. What it means is it will not have the power to control your progress.
2. Learn from the past and go past it.
Surely there will be stuff you can learn from your past experiences. Check it out. Grab the wisdom. File it. Then, let go of the past into history.
There are wonderful stuff awaiting you in the future. You got to keep moving forward to accomplish all you are called to do. Run for what’s ahead! Learn to forget the past.
