Peter’s Declaration About Jesus

Peters Declaration About Jesus

Peter’s Declaration About Jesus (Matthew 16:13-23)

When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?” They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?” Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven. And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.” Then he ordered his disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Messiah.

From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life. Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. “Never, Lord!” he said. “This shall never happen to you!” Jesus turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.”

Jesus proclaims Peter very fortunate for his rightful faith declaration: Peter answered, ‘You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God’. Jesus replied ‘It is well for you, Simon Barjona, for it is not flesh or blood that has revealed this to you but my Father in heaven’ (Mt 16:16-17).

By this congratulation Jesus promises Peter the primacy of his Church; but, shortly after, He scolds Peter for having a very human and wrong idea of what the Messiah would do: Then Peter took him aside and began to reproach him, ‘Never, Lord! No, this must never happen to you’. But Jesus turned to him and said, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.” (Mt 16:22-23).

We have to be grateful to the evangelists for presenting us the first disciples of Jesus as they actually were: no idealized characters, but people of flesh and blood as ourselves, with their defects and virtues; which gets them closer to us and helps us to see that perfecting ourselves in Christian life is a certain path we all have to follow, for nobody is born knowing all the answers.

As we already know how history goes, let us accept Jesus Christ was the suffering Messiah prophet Isaiah announced who offered his life in the Cross. What is more difficult to accept is that we must keep on presenting his work by following the same path of surrendering, renunciation and sacrifice.

Imbued, as we appear to be, with a society that encourages quick success, learning without any effort and in a funny way, and achieving the maximum profit with the least possible strain, it should not surprise us we end up by seeing things more as people do than as God does. Once he received the Holy Spirit, Peter learned where the path he had to follow went through and he lived by this expectation.

“World tribulations are full of sadness and empty of any prizes; but those we suffer for God are softened by the hope of an eternal prize” – St. Ephraem.

“Rabbi, where are you staying?.. He said to them, come and see” – Jn 1:38. This was the beginning of a great Kingdom started by a youth who had neither any riches nor fame.

A carpenter boy who taught us the meaning of a simple word ‘Love’. Till today this kingdom of Love stands solid. Even when the world saw the rise and fall of many, he still remains the central figure in the pages of history. Before him is the era of unknown and with his death he marked a new beginning.

Jesus Christ, the everlasting youth our Savior. He is a Healer and a Teacher who Professionally Engineered the foundations of human Salvation. You my friend are chosen. You have received a divine call to ‘come and see’. So be there in Cochin in the second week of September!

Profess Messiah Conference Prayer:

Jesus, help us to be in prayer and entreaty in the Spirit on every possible occasion. Pour out Your Spirit that we may joyfully work in the vineyard of Profess Messiah. We pray that all the resources and participants of Profess Messiah grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ (2 Peter 3:18).

The Christmas Gift

The Christmas Gift

T’was eight centuries before Christ came to the earth,
The Holy Scriptures foretold of the Messiah’s Birth.
The world was in peril with distress and gloom,
Far and wide there was destruction and doom.

People were lost – they were deaf, blind and dumb;
God promised a Savior one day would come.
The prophesies gave the details of His Birth,
It was certain He’d come to transform the earth.

He’d be born of a virgin, laid in a manger with hay,
Then His Hands and Feet pierced on His final day.
It was told where He’d be born and His Ancestral Line,
He would be King of Kings, completely Divine.

An angel told Mary that she would be the one
To give birth to God’s Child, His Only Begotten Son.
The Lord had a purpose for which He came;
God would be with us – Immanuel, His Name;

Mankind would learn about peace, hope, and joy;
It would all come about in this small Baby Boy.
He was the Prince of Peace, a real Beacon of Light;
Reverent and Righteous; He taught wrong from right.

He came to restore us and showed us to care
And to help one another; He taught us to share.
Many followed and listened to all that He said.
Hearts and lives changed as their souls had been fed.

His Wisdom was divine, far beyond what they’d known;
Many traveled great distance; crowds really had grown.
He was a Humble Servant as He showed us pure love.
He taught us to know our Heavenly Father above.

He was Holy and Sinless, never even told a lie.
He was mocked, and beaten, then crucified to die.
Folks were amazed and confused with all that went on,
They didn’t understand…until He was gone.

He made the sacrifice for our debt to be paid.
For upon Him all of our sins had been laid.
He was Goodness and Grace and came to relieve
The wretched grasp of satan to all who believe.

He was God as a Man to His last dying breath,
Then rose from the dead with His power over death.
This all actually happened, it isn’t folklore.
He told us of Heaven and showed us there’s more.

Christ had come to save the souls on earth,
He offers deliverance and a second birth.
We call Him Jesus and He is with us today;
He is Lord of all Lords and He is the Way.

He’s the Counselor, Comforter, Redeemer and Friend,
He Reigns over all; His Rule never will end.
We celebrate His Birth and all that it means
With songs and displays of Nativity scenes.

His Amazing Grace is the actual reason
That we recognize and rejoice this season.
Again this year we celebrate His Holy Birth;
Merry Christmas to all and to all Peace On Earth!
