If You Were Born In A Poor Family

My blessed family

We don’t get to decide to which family we are born into or the financial status of our parents. It happens like everything else, according to our Almighty Father’s plan. Have you ever questioned this plan? If yes, read on.

The First Incident – The Audi car

Today, on the way back from work, I happened to see a beautiful Audi A4 car (costs around 50 lakhs of Indian Rupees) on the road. The awesome appearance of this luxury car made me stand and look at it until it passed out of my sight. This raised many thoughts in my mind. When will I ever be able to buy such a luxurious car like that one? My brain immediately answered that question “No Georgy, you are never going to have that much money to buy that car and even if you earn that much someday, you will surely have a lot other priorities to be completed using that much money”.

This made me think about the owner of the car. Obviously he might be a very rich man, might be a very successful professional or it can be that his parents had lots of money. I mean, he might be born into a very wealthy family who have so much wealth in excess to spare for this luxurious car. This same thought made me look at my family, which is an average one. Even though both my parents were employed, I am sure they can never afford to buy me such luxuries of life. For a second I looked up at the heaven and told in my mind “God, if you had wished, then it would have been me sitting in that luxurious car. I could have lived with all the luxuries that life could provide me. But you chose not to!”. Day-dreaming about my never-to-happen Audi-drive, I moved ahead to the local railway station.

The Second Incident – The Popcorn Seller

After getting into the local train, I happened to see another person who completely made me feel how stupid I was. It was a 10 year old boy selling popcorn to all the train passengers. At each station, he would get down and go to the next compartment and continue his sale. He is doing this all day. I started to guess the condition back at his home.

The boy must be born to a very poor family whose parents are doing manual labor to earn daily bread for themselves and their children. They don’t earn enough to send their kids to school as primary education sounds like luxury to them considering their monthly income. The boy is helping his family for their livelihood. School and education is not possible for him and he will surely end up as a manual laborer just like his parents, unless some miracle happens.

This gave birth to another thought inside my head. “It could have been you in his place. But God chose not to! He gave you well employed parents who could give you very good education apart from all your basic needs. Leveraging on that, you were able to earn a good job in this highly competitive world which enables you to lead a normal happy life and which will also help you bring up your children in the best way possible.” This time, I looked up to the heavens and said THANK YOU LORD for the family I was born into, thank you Lord for my lovely parents who gave me the best of everything they possibly could, thank you Lord.

Be Thankful For Your Family Background

The very fact that you are reading this article on your computer, laptop, iPad or mobile handset is a proof that you are truly blessed than millions of others who live on the same planet, just like you and me. But its too common that we all never look down the ladder of life. Our eyes are only looking at greater things, greater comfort, greater luxuries just like the Audi car that caught my attention. It is not that we should never look at those who are more well placed in life or not try to improve our situation, be it our profession, be it our skills, be it any good thing that we have. On the contrary, we should be making the best use of all the gifts and resources God has provided us in this life and should try to continually improve ourselves, our skill-set, our job status, everything for HIS greater glory.

But please remember that we should never look up the ladder and complain about our present situation. We are very well up the ladder and we have so many brothers and sisters who are less fortunate than us, just like that popcorn seller boy. So while you try to improve yourselves and your present situation and comforts, while you try hard to be in your boss’s chair one day, all this time, please remember: you should never stop thanking our God for your present state of life which He has generously gifted you.

Thankfulness Calls For Action

I am afraid, being thankful alone won’t be enough. Your creator, Our almighty God definitely wants you to utilize all the gifts He has bestowed upon you including your education, your job, your skills, your money, your time, everything, for helping all those less fortunate ones around you. You have much more duties to perform for others. With more gifts, come more duties.

Try to help those who are really in need of your help. Don’t shoo away saying ‘What difference can I make to their lives?’. When you help a child get his forbidden education, you really do make a lot of difference in his life. So, where ever you are, take a look around. I am sure the Holy Spirit will show you hundreds of ways to help those needy ones around you and thereby express your gratefulness to the Lord in its fullness. God bless you all.

Be Careful When You Make Fun Of Others

Be Careful When You Make Fun Of Others

Some days ago someone sent me the following:-

The girl you just called fat… She is on diet pills.
The girl you just called ugly, she spends hours putting makeup on hoping people will like her.
The boy you just tripped… He is abused enough at home.
See the man with the ugly scars… He fought for his country.
The 14-year-old girl…with a kid, That you just called a slut… she got raped.
That guy you just made fun of crying… His mother is dying.
People have already enough sorrow to deal with,
Please do not give them anymore just because You wanna crack a joke!

As I was reading this, my thought flew back to my second standard class room. We were all seven-year-olds. There were two of them cousins as our classmates; both had same names – Tresa – after their Grandma according to the custom in Kerala Christian family, as they were the firstborns in their family.

Their parents were farmers. One was fair, thin and tall, and came in clean clothes and in time for the class. The second was small and short and on the dark side. She came practically all the time late for class, and her clothes would be dirty and untidy, her hair unkempt. Along with her cousin we derided her many times. She would look at us silently. But I noticed my class teacher was always kind to her. May be she knew the family.

One fine day she did not come. And we came to know our “scapegoat” was no more. You can imagine how our “pharisaic” feelings melted down. On enquiry we came to know that as the eldest in the family, this little child had to do all the chores in the home she left for school.

Her desire to study brought her to school, even if it was late, though she never had time to wash her face or comb her hair. As she would come on empty stomach she would stay so until she reached home. The midday meal was served for the BPL families’ children, so she never had access to it.

I had learned a big lesson. Tresa forgive us! You will be enjoying heaven now! Like the story of Rich man and Lazurus in the Gospel ask the Lord to have mercy on us your classmates, on this little “rich” creatures whose hearts were too small to recognize your love for your family, eyes blind to see your greatness, and deaf to hear your silent cry for understanding and acceptance. We failed to see your eyes thirsting for mercy and love, understanding and help, ears eager to hear a comforting word.

Why God Created The Disabled And The Poor

Why God Created The Disabled And The Poor

God created man, but it was man who caused sin to come into the world when Adam and Eve ate the apple in the Garden of Eden. Ever since then, sin has taken shape in the form of sickness, disease, hate, greed etc… This is not to say that people with sickness and disabilities have brought it upon themselves but that the evolution of sin has distorted what God created, which was a perfect human being in His own image.

Man’s Sin

Man’s sin has caused us to abuse the resources the world has to offer. This is ultimately creating more disease and disabilities because our water and food is poisoned by man’s interference. Sin in the form of greed, has also caused there to be a great divide between the wealthy and poor. If greed did not exist there would be enough food to feed everyone on the planet because God’s intention was to provide for his children. When sin entered our world, it caused us to be separated from God.

God created two worlds: this life, and the Hereafter. The Hereafter is the greater life – which lasts forever. This life is short, difficult, full of pain and injustice. We ask ourselves: why would God allow all this? Some people end up disbelieving in God. Their reasoning is that: if God is good, why would He allow terrible things to happen?

This life is only a Test

The answer is that this short, difficult life is only a test. The result of the test is what is important. What do you think of someone who lives for a hundred years, having everything he or she ever needs – wealth, fun, friends – but then ends up for the rest of eternity suffering in Hell because of his or her disbelief and evil deeds? Would you say that person was fortunate, or unfortunate?

And what would you say about a person who lived life suffering poverty, illness or oppression – but enters Paradise because of his or her belief and good deeds, and is given great things to enjoy – forever? Would they be unfortunate, or fortunate?

Like a child who is afraid of the Doctor

The suffering in this life is like a child who is afraid of the doctor. He is so scared; and he does not understand why his parents – who love him – would put him through such an awful thing. But the parents know that, if the child suffers a little by going to the doctor, it will be BETTER for him – for the rest of his life. That is what God knows – and we are just little children. We may dislike something which will actually be good for us, and we may like and desire something which may be bad for us. It is God who knows – and we do not.

I think, God created the Universe in different forms especially to maintain the balance of the world to enable living things lead a perfect and decent life. All the creations are in the universe are in the intention of maintain the balance. He had given the humans the sixth sense and self-determination to live independently to lead our life in a way He wants to be.

As the nature of the earth is also different and it is necessary the creations has to be in different shapes and nature to exist in that environment. Like all other creations among human poor, disable etc. are created in the same manner. Our behavioral patterns also deciding factor on this. Actually we do not know the benefits in those creations and Creator only knows.

Helping the Poor

Christians are commanded to help one another but we are also called to help those who are less fortunate than we are. Proverbs 21:13 is among the most powerful calls from God to help those who are hungry because “If a man shuts his ears to the cry of the poor, he too will cry out and not be answered.” First John 3:17 states that, “If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him?” Job wrote, “I rescued the poor who cried for help, and the fatherless who had none to assist them” (Job 29:12).

God asked, “Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter when you see the naked, to clothe them, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood” (Isaiah 58:7)? We also need to “Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy” (Prov 31:8-9). In fact, “The righteous care about justice for the poor, but the wicked have no such concern” (Prov 29:7).

The world is only a Trial

According to Him the world is only a trial. If we all are created identically how could we identify ourselves? How do we get our daily needs to lead our live? So people have to be in different forms and stages and to perform different duties and works to fulfill the requirements of all human. How do we do charity to get God’s nearness, if there is no poor?

If He didn’t create us with hunger and thirst, the entire world would be in a state of stand still. No one moves. It is the urge of hunger and thirst only made us to move to find our needs to fill our stomach and made the world in motion. If there is no sexual urge there won’t be a single creation except the direct creation of the God. Only the Adam and Eve exist.

If we lead a life instructed and expected by the God we will be sent to the heaven and others to the hell. This is called trial and needs reward or punishment. We know a trial version is in a stage of changing process and is not permanent but to test practically the maximum usage or output of a product, to decide whether we launch/buy it or not.

God judges our world’s life as our trial period and gives us accordingly. Then the original life begins, which is in the hereafter.
