Book : Peace of Soul by Fulton J. Sheen

Peace of Soul

Bishop Sheen asks readers to stop blaming their subconscious for their ills and examine instead their conscience, to turn away from the psychoanalyst and turn to God. Through this book ‘Peace of Soul’, he shows readers that peace of soul cannot come from humankind, but must come through Divine help.

Theme :

Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen brilliantly examines the vast differences between the benefits of psychotherapy and true confession that leads to conversion. While one may help the patient gain some peace of mind, the Christian gains something far greater through the grace of Confession: peace of soul.

Reviews :

“The writing is clear and forceful, the logic frequent-ly brilliant…This is a rewarding experience for any reader and those of other religions or of none will enjoy it even when in disagreement”…..Catholic World

This book is a true lifeline to modern man’s delusion of reality. If any person is wise enough to believe in God, then it will be subtly obvious that this book is a gift from heaven and Sheen was the well appointed messenger. Do your soul the honor of reading this book, it is as valuable to our spiritual life as breathing and water is to our physical.

It is a fantastic answer to todays psychobabble. We’ve turned away from God as a society, and there is a need to return to faith in order to find happiness and peace. I would rather be a faithful servant of God than a prideful servant of man. Man cannot save any of us, only God can save us from a horrible eternity.

Book : The Imitation of Mary by Thomas a Kempis

The imitation of Mary

Anyone who has read “The Imitation of Christ” by Thomas A. Kempis may be left wondering if this Catholic brother had any devotion to Mary. The Imitation of Mary is a resounding “Yes!”. Here, Thomas shows his deep insight into the prerogatives, graces and glory of Mary.

Theme :

The Imitation of Mary is a wonderful introduction to true devotion to Mary. Read it prayerfully, read it slowly and above all read it meditatively to enter into the Mystery of Christ and his love for his mother. Thomas is, once more, a sure guide leading you along a sound and faithful path to Mary and with Mary to Jesus.

The contents are divided into 4 parts:
# Book 1: Meeting Mary.
# Book 2: Knowing Mary.
# Book 3: Loving Mary.
# Book 4: Calling on Mary in Prayer and Song.

Excerpts :

Writing about the “Grandeurs and Glories of Mary“, Thomas exclaims, “O Mary, greater than the heavens, you have the world under your feet and you are seated close to God, on the throne of honor which Jesus gave you.” Here, Thomas shows his deep insight into scriptures, for Mary as “Mother of the Lord” is the new Queen-Mother and just as Solomon who points towards Christ, “stood up to meet her [his mother] and paid her homage. Then he sat down upon his throne, and a throne was provided for the king’s mother, who sat at his right.” (2 Kings, 2:19) so does Jesus seat his mother at his right hand side.

Elsewhere, Thomas writes saying that “by testimony of the Holy Scripture Mary was from all time, and will be always, the holiest virgin among all virgins, the most beatiful women among all women, the sweetest mother among all mothers.”

About the Author : Thomas à Kempis (1380-1471)

Thomas à Kempis was a late Medieval Catholic monk and author of The Imitation of Christ, one of the best known Christian books on devotion. His writings are all of a devotional character and include tracts and meditations, letters, sermons, a life of Saint Lydewigis, a Christian woman who remained steadfast under a great stress of afflictions, and biographies of Groote, Radewijns, and nine of their companions. Works similar in content to the Imitation of Christ, and pervaded by the same spirit, are his prolonged meditation on the life and blessings of the Savior and another on the Incarnation. Both of these works overflow with adoration for Christ.

What about Heaven and Hell?

What about Heaven and Hell

How is the comic above? Hey, Its just a joke! What are your views on heaven and hell?

Well, I don’t believe that all those who are not Christians will go to hell and I don’t also  believe that all Christians go to heaven. A person is guided by his conscience, on what is right or wrong. Since we are Christians, we have a greater knowledge about God’s plans for us and how he wants us to live. (Thanks to Sunday classes). So even if we commit a small sin from our part, it will be dealt with more seriousness.

Consider others, who are not Christians. Take Hindus, for eg. They are not taught all the morals as we were taught (they don’t have Sunday classes). So the same sin committed by one Hindu will be seen with less severeness. But even as Hindus, they also have their holy book, The BHAGAVAD-GITA and laws to obey. So breaking those laws while already knowing that they are sins, will be very harmful for their souls too.

In short, knowing more about sins, makes one’s struggle to get into heaven more difficult. But we can’t sit here doing all these sins, saying “From now on, I won’t read any law or Holy Book so that Something I do won’t become a sin, in my knowledge”.

Your conscience knows, man, it really pricks you when you sin or when you are about to. Hear its voice!
